Superhuman by Habit: A Guide to Becoming the Best Possible Version of Yourself, One Tiny Habit at a Time Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,216 ratings

Our willpower is limited, yet we rely on it every day to get our tasks done. Even if we build willpower slowly over time, it's never enough to reach all of our goals. The solution lies in habit creation, the method by which we transform hard tasks into easy ones, making them automatic and independent of our will power. Each of us has millions of habits, in how we do our work, interact with others, perceive the world, and think about ourselves. Left unexamined, these habits are just as likely to hinder our progress as they are to push it along. Without a deliberate system for building habits, we become our own worst enemy.

Superhuman by Habit examines habit building in depth. It covers the principles and philosophies of habit building, as well as the practical nuts and bolts implementing those habits. The second half of the audiobook is dedicated to specific habits in every major area of life, covering the pros and cons of each, the path to implementing them, and specific notes about each one.

“It doesn’t always feel like it, but these days my life is dictated by the habits I’ve created. When people learn that I write every single day, study a foreign language every day, work on my big projects every day, eat healthy every day, work out every other day, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule, they marvel at the deep well of self discipline that I have. In truth, though, it’s all just habits that feel easy. Habits are the closest thing we can get to having superpowers.

This book is a collection of the mindsets and techniques I’ve used to rebuild myself with habits. If you, like I used to be, can barely stay on top of the essentials of day-to-day living, this book is for you. If you perform well, but are inconsistent, this book is for you. Or if you’re a self-optimizer who already performs at a high level, but wants to squeeze even more out of himself, this book is for you.”

~ Tynan from Superhuman by Habit

I randomly found this book on Amazon and was pulled in by the cover and title.

I’d never heard of Tynan but within the first few pages I was already blown away and knew I’d be doing a Note on it while *strongly* recommending this little manifesto for your reading and optimizing pleasure.

We’ve done a number of Notes on willpower + habit building, including Willpower by Roy Baumeister, The Willpower Instinct by Kelly McGonigal, and The Power of Habit by Duhigg. Plus books like Mastery by George Leonard, Mindset by Carol Dweck, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin.

I highly recommend all of them.

But this one distills the practical essence of all of those books into one little transformative manifesto that I think you’ll really love. And you can read it in an afternoon if you’re feeling so inspired.

Let's explore some of my favorite Big Ideas:

1. What Is a Habit? - An outfit a nun wears, of course!
2. Consistency - Is everything.
3. New vs. Old - We want more old habits.
4. Don't Miss a Day - Seriously. Don't.
5. Never Skip Twice - Absolutely (!) don't do that.

Here’s to cultivating superhuman abilities one tiny habit at a time!

The Power of Habit is highly overrated. Instead, in this book Mr. Tynan delivers a powerful and actionable plan to become a delivering machine. Seriously, this is the way to make changes with adhesion to the plan.

Instead of diving into stories and then giving some abstract actionable steps, this book lay out the steps and then provide some reason why, making it more effective and an easy read.

Why not five stars? Because it gravitates around values of young educated cosmopolitan American guys (writers/bloggers?), which is sometimes just too much for me (e.g. green tea is the hype now). Pun itented, it is just no my cup of tea and I had to push through, taking the advice and applying it to other ideas for habits.

But the author keeps the door open when it says to try habits that are out (or even opposite) of its current ethos, which is a great habit to form.

Combining this book with 1% solution (I know, corny story, but great insight) can give you a great game plan for the long term.

The next day I finished the book could clearly see how easy is to form habits according to the ideas from the book. You should try and, c’mon, for five bucks it is a no-brainer.

This is the first book of Tynan's I have read. I have been a follower of his blog for a while, and he has earned my admiration. This book did not disappoint! Although I have had the book for about a week, I just now finished it, even though I am a very fast reader. Why is this? Because when I am reading something I truly enjoy, I don't want the experience to be over, so I drag it out as long as I can! This was such a book.

Even though I am quite a bit older than the author, I have found that he has a lot to teach me. He writes not only about how to incorporate new habits into your life, but also why you would want to. As a result of reading this book, I have noted several habits I want - and need - to get moving on. And now I know how best to do just that! In addition, the author gives a list of recommended habits that he thinks will improve anyone's life, and how to go about adding them. Fortunately for me, several of these habits exist already in my repertoire, and I am glad to note that I don't have to or need to "load" them as well.

There are a few typos in this book. As a writer myself, I know how hard it is to catch everything. I have no doubt that Tynan will fix the few that have appeared, and I do not find the quantity of typos to be high enough to be distracting. The message he transmits is more important than a few typos (and I don't often say that - those who know me know that I am a harsh critic of errors.)

If you have a need, or just a desire, to improve your life, especially if you want to do it in a systematic and orderly way, causing the least trouble for yourself, this is definitely the book for you. I absolutely do recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lifechanging! :) One of the most effective books I've ever read, almost on a par with 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People'
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2017
Lifechanging! At first tried to ignore the advice to go slowly...wrote a whole programme, didnt even last a day, lol. Followed the book, starting with having a smoothie for breakfast every day, then making sure to floss every single day, then adding daily piano practice. I'm semi-retired and was suffering extreme procrastination - this book changed my whole day, and thus my whole life. Finally getting work done and stepping away from the TV. Thank you. :)

(Some people said they found the author too perfect: I dont think so. He says he was a couch potato, as I was, and already my friends are starting to say "Amanda, you're so disciplined/persistent/get things done" etc. I'm not at all...was the worst procrasinator ever. The book method makes it easy to be "perfect" without needing willpower.)
